New Features - January 2025
We're happy to announce several updates to Traili Map that we hope will make your bike route planning experience better. These new features focus on improving route discovery and making it easier to plan (good) bike routes.
New Route Explorer: Discover Curated Bike Trails

The main piece of the latest update is the new Route Explorer, a comprehensive catalog of hand-picked, high-quality bike trails. The trails from Route Explorer will be used by the route planner, combining detailed trail information from both our curated catalog and OpenStreetMap data.
When searching for routes, you'll now get access to:
- User reviews and ratings
- Detailed trail descriptions
- Photo galleries
- Trail surface conditions
- Difficulty levels
The catalog is actively growing, with new trails being added regularly. We've also added a community contribution feature – riders can suggest their favorite trails directly through the platform using the suggestion tool in the top left corner.
Layer Locking for Better Multi-Route Planning

This feature allows you to lock any route layer, preventing accidental modifications when working with multiple routes. It's particularly useful when fine-tuning complex routes or comparing different path options.
GPX Import with Route Matching

For riders who track their adventures with GPS devices or plan routes in other apps, we've added comprehensive GPX file import capabilities. Each imported route automatically creates a new layer in your workspace.
The standout feature here is the new "route matching" option. When enabled, it analyzes your imported GPX track and enriches it with detailed information about:
- Surface types
- Way types
- Trail names
Smart Routing Override: "Don't Follow Ways"

Sometimes local knowledge trumps digital maps – like knowing that a gate marked as closed is actually open to cyclists. Our new "Don't Follow Ways" feature gives you the flexibility to override the standard routing algorithm for these situations.
By right-clicking on the map, you can now create straight-line segments that ignore the usual routing constraints. This feature is perfect for:
- Crossing areas where the map data is outdated
- Taking permitted shortcuts through parks or open spaces
- Routing through newly opened paths not yet in the database
Looking Forward
